Manchester United and Uruguayan national team midfielder, Manuel Ugarte, suffered a serious injury during the 2026 World Cup group stage match against Ecuador. The 25-year-old left the field on a stretcher after sustaining an injury estimated to be a possible tear to his anterior cruciate ligament, in addition to a possible meniscus injury.

According to reports from Physio Scout, the type of injury indicates lateral pressure on the knee and a disconnected rotation mechanism, which are typical signs of a cruciate ligament tear. Calf muscle spasm was also noted, which is common in such injuries.

It is estimated that the recovery period from this injury may extend from 9 to 12 months, which means that Ugarte may be out of action for a long time. Ugarte joined Manchester United from Paris Saint-Germain in 2024, and made 24 appearances during the Premier League last season. With the Uruguay national team exiting the 2026 World Cup, this injury will be a severe blow to the team that was unable to advance beyond the group stage.
