Match officials were active at the 2026 World Cup. It took 27 matches over just seven days for officials to award more red cards than they did during the entire 2018 and 2022 tournaments. The record for red cards in a single tournament is 28, set in 2006. These moments have resulted in penalties and free kicks outside the penalty area, as well as teams taking advantage of opponents who are now down to ten men. FOX Sports rules analyst Mark Clattenburg noted the increase in red cards, saying: “Players are handling well, but they are making mistakes in the penalty area, perhaps in a state of panic.” He added: "I'm not saying that players who enter the penalty area and cause penalties are more than happy to make a mistake and get a red card, knowing that they will miss the next match, but now that they have 26 players on the list, there are a lot of players to cover those positions." The record number of red cards in a single tournament is 28 in the 2006 edition, including nine direct red cards. Here's a look at each red card and its implications for the 2026 World Cup.
