Mickey van der Hart shares his unique experience in South Africa

Cape Town City goalkeeper Mickey van der Hart recalls funny moments from his adventures in South Africa. He recalls an incident where the team was on its way back from an away match, when they met with an accident on the road and were detained for eight hours in a remote area. He laughs as he talks about that moment, as the nature around them was amazing. “We were playing cards on the side of the road, and there were also truck drivers from a nearby coal mine, and some of them decided to smoke a cigarette,” he says.

When he moved here, he knew this wasn't an option to help his career, but rather a life experience. He enjoys his adventure with his eyes open and finds beauty in everything that is different about life in the Netherlands.

After Robin van Persie left SC Heerenveen, Micky felt his time in Friesland was over. He and his girlfriend were looking to move abroad again after a previous experience in Poland, but the timing wasn't ideal. They were expecting their first child and had prepared the baby's room in Zwolle. When he had the opportunity to move to Cape Town, they decided to change their plans at the last minute.

Once he arrives in the beautiful city overlooking the Atlantic Ocean, he realizes that things are going in much more chaotic ways than in Europe. The club was facing several legal issues, making its status in the league uncertain. Although he had signed his contract, the club believed it was unwise to announce it during such a turbulent period. He commented: "I had offers from other clubs, but the basis was that if they were relegated, they would have to let go of many expensive players. So, it was strange for them to suddenly appear in the picture. I was also not allowed to appear in pictures during training."
