Rangers intend to appeal the four-match suspension of manager Dirk McInnes, which was issued over his comments in which he deemed the decision to award Celtic a late penalty “disgusting”. In turn, Willie Collum, the Scottish FA's chief referee, supported the decision, pointing to "clear evidence" showing that Sam Nicholson's hand and arm were in an abnormal position, which led to a contact punishable as a penalty kick.

The Rangers statement concluded by saying: "Respect for referees and legitimate monitoring are not mutually exclusive principles. Watt, who has since moved to Turkish club Samsunspor, received a four-match ban after describing the decision as “the worst decision in the history of video technology.” Matherll was also fined £5,000 for posting a video with the headline: “While the football world mocks our game, we must just draw a line in the sand and shift the focus.”

The Scottish Football Association's compliance officer issued complaints against all three parties under Disciplinary Rule 72, which states: "No recognized football body, club, official or other person under the jurisdiction of the Scottish Football Association is permitted to comment in an interview, online blog, on any social media site, or in any other manner that is likely to give rise to publicity describing the performance or decisions of any of the referees in a way that suggests bias or incompetence."
