The first day of the Women's T20 World Cup, expected to be the biggest in the game's history, saw the spotlight shift away from Ben Stokes and the West End club to a West End musical and a resounding victory for England as they bid for their moment of equal success. The opening ceremony was held at Edgbaston Stadium with a musical performance by Wicked, followed by England beating Sri Lanka by 87 points, a welcome achievement at a time when the sport was forced to deny that the men's national team had become a "national disgrace". There was no ban for England Women in Birmingham on Friday evening, rather there was a sense of satisfaction in their first steps towards realizing their lofty ambitions at a crucial moment for the women's game. One of the main reasons the England and Wales Cricket Board was angry with Stokes and Gus Atkinson was that they did not want anything to distract from the women's game's attempts to put on an unprecedented show. England will hope to enter the public consciousness during the T20 World Cup in the same way as their counterparts did when they hosted and won major tournaments: the European Football Championships in 2022 and 2025, and last year's Rugby World Cup. The International Cricket Commission (ICC) is anticipating a record attendance, with more than 250,000 fans expected, with an ambition to reach 300,000. Global viewership numbers for the Women's World Cup, which was held last year, exceeded 500 million, and this tournament has the potential to exceed that number. Tournament Director Beth Barrett-Wilde is aware of the expectations associated with the World Cup, as the body seeks to bring women's cricket into the mainstream. “We want this to become normal, to normalize women's cricket,” said Barrett-Wylde. England, who have won all four tournaments they have hosted since 1973, need to perform well in the tournament to realize their ambitions. Although it failed to win any of the last six tournaments, the victory will inspire future generations. “The best way for England to inspire the next generation is to win,” says Nasser Hussain, former England captain. ![Image](https://static01.nyt.com/athletic/uploads/wp/2026/06/12172340/GettyImages-2280580382-scaled-e1781299448321.jpg) The 12-team tournament faces multiple challenges, most notably the clash with the men's Test series against New Zealand and the FIFA Men's World Cup that began Thursday in the United States, Canada and Mexico, which will run until July 19. Despite these challenges, Variant, the new face of Sky's coverage, believes the two tournaments can go hand in hand. “If England starts doing well in both tournaments, we can enjoy both,” she said. The tournament got off to a stunning start, with Dani Wyatt-Hogg scoring 105 not out off 62 balls, as England achieved the highest score in the history of the Women's T20 World Cup. She also had a great moment when she removed Sri Lanka captain, Chamari Attapathu, from the field. “It was for Daisy,” Wyatt-Hogg said of her celebration after scoring the goal. “We said it was important to start well, and we did,” she said, adding that she enjoyed the atmosphere. This tournament represents an exciting start, as England seeks to deliver a distinguished performance in this historic tournament.
