Football History: How video analysis contributed to the success of the Netherlands national team in the 1998 World Cup

As part of our football flashback, we go back in time to the summer of 1998, where the Netherlands made a huge impression at the World Cup. Under the guidance of coach Guus Hiddink, the team left nothing to chance and paid attention to minute details, employing a video analyst, which was considered modern at the time. The Netherlands' run in the tournament stopped at the semi-finals, where they faced the Brazilian team, which prevailed in the penalty shootout. One of the most prominent innovations in that World Cup was the reliance on video analysis, as Roberto Tolentino was the analyst who worked closely with the team until 2010.  Speaking in an interview in 1998, Tolentino recalled how he used technology to analyze the Netherlands' performance and that of opponents. Born in Italy, Tolentino began his career as a hockey player before turning to the world of sports analysis. He talked about how he moved to the Netherlands after working with well-known hockey players, and how his academic background in electronics and computer science contributed to the development of analysis methods. During that period, he recorded matches for the Italian national team, analyzing the performance using a video camera. The creativity presented by Tolentino contributed to enhancing professionalism within the Dutch national team organization, adding a new character to the method of preparing for matches. This experience was evidence of how technology can play a pivotal role in improving athletic performance.
