The room for Leo: the life and the sacrifice of Jorge Messi.

From the Workshop to the Top of Football: The Amazing Journey of a Metalworker Father who braved economic crises, forced Barcelona to sign a contract on a napkin, and built the empire of his son, Lionel Messi. More than just an agent, more than just a manager, he was a father. Jorge Horacio Messi, who died at the age of 68 on the evening of Friday, August 7, 2026 in a clinic in the city of Rosario after a long illness, was the beginning and guardian of the whole football world of his son Lionel. The news of his death, which came a few weeks before the end of the World Cup, had a profound impact on the global sporting scene, prompting “The Flea” to immediately return from the United States to his native Argentina.

To understand Jorge's impact on world football, it is not enough just to count the accolades his son has won; Rather, it is necessary to dive into the factories of Villa Constitution and a transatlantic trip that changed the history of sports. Born in Rosario on January 21, 1958, Jorge Messi lived the life of an ordinary Argentine working class. Married to Silvia Maria Cuccittini, he worked as a department manager at the Akindar steel factory. His origins go back to Italian immigration in the late 19th century, where his family came from Marche.

Jorge's career changed in the late 1990s when his son Leonel was diagnosed with a serious growth hormone defect. Since the Argentine economy was facing crises, local clubs were unable to afford the necessary treatment. Therefore, Jorge decided to defy fate. He took his son by the hand and traveled to Barcelona to present him in an experiment. It was the stubbornness of the father, who was determined not to return without guarantees for the health and future of his son, that prompted Barcelona official Carles Rexach to sign that famous contract on a paper napkin in a Catalan restaurant.

Jorge settled in Spain with Leonel, accepting the painful disintegration of the family so that his son could become what he was destined to become. As Lionel progressed through the world of football and achieved global fame, Jorge took on the role of sole agent and administrator for Lionel Messi's management company. His management was focused on protecting his son's talent from outside pressures, allowing him to focus on the field.

Jorge managed some of the highest contracts in football history, taking care of global image rights and leading major transfers in recent years: from the painful parting with Barcelona in 2021 to the move to Paris Saint-Germain, and then the strategic move to the American League with Inter Miami. This professional cooperation was extensive, but not without legal storms, such as the tax fraud case in Spain in 2016, but the father was always the legal and human shield around his son. In recent months, Jorge returned to Rosario for treatment for pancreatic cancer. Behind the scenes during recent tournaments, Lionel played knowing that his father was fighting his toughest battles. A few days after his death, the Argentine national team captain posted a touching message on social media expressing his daily relationship, youth training and continued parental support.

“You were asking me to play and I was telling you that we will reach the final. I don’t know how I will continue without you.” In the same statement, the star opened up about great uncertainty about his future in football, stating that he has serious doubts about the possibility of continuing to play for a long time. With the departure of Jorge Messi, not only does a successful sports agent disappear, but the backbone that has supported and protected the most pure talent in modern football for a quarter of a century collapses.

ماذا بعد

Lionel Messi is expected to return to Argentina to attend his father's farewell ceremony, which could affect his current career with Inter Miami in the MLS. Players and coaches are expected to talk about Jorge's legacy and his impact on Lionel's career.
