• The Kuma team, under the leadership of Cesc Fabregas, recorded a historic 4-1 victory over Manchester United in the Champions League, reflecting their development from the fourth division to the top flight.
• Champions League: Cesc Fabregas and Como enjoy historic Man Utd tie - BBC Sport.

In 2008, when Manchester United celebrated their latest Champions League title, Kuma were playing in the fourth tier, in one of nine semi-professional regional leagues. But last Wednesday night, in a rainy atmosphere at Giuseppe Senigallia Stadium overlooking Lake Koma, the Koma team showed how much they have improved under coach Cesc Fabregas. Indeed, after their crushing 4-1 victory over Manchester United, it can be said that they have surpassed the storied English team.

Fabregas' team was passing the ball brilliantly, as Manchester United suffered from a loss of concentration in defence, making this the seventh match in a row in which the English team failed to win in all competitions, a phenomenon that has not happened since 2015. At the heart of the team was the outstanding player Nico Paz, who moved from Real Madrid in 2024, scoring two goals and making another.

Since the start of September, Paz has been involved in the most direct goals of all players in Serie A, scoring four goals and registering five assists in eight matches. Paz said: “It was a historic night because we faced one of the best teams of all time, and it is great to achieve this at home. We are very happy with our performance.”

After this impressive performance, he now has nine goal contributions in eight matches. He also became the youngest Argentine player to score three goals in a single Champions League match since Lionel Messi against Bayern Munich in April 2009. Journalist Lars Sivertsen praised Paz, saying: "Paz runs great, covers a lot of space. He combines the traditional Argentine number 10 style with the requirements of modern football."

For the Heap team, this victory is the most notable since the beginning of their project. One employee said: “It's Manchester United. We just understand the fact that we are playing against Inter, Milan and Juventus.” CEO of the Koma Foundation, Merwan Surwaso, added that Koma's status as an amateur team is what attracted the media company "Sent Entertainment", which is owned by Indonesian billionaire Robert Budi Hartono and his brother Mikhail Bambang Hartono.

When they struck the deal in 2019, their plan was for a television project, with the idea of showing matches featuring young Indonesian players. Visiting Manchester United was not part of the plan. However, Kuma's exciting story brings with it some questions. Some question how they will be able to comply with UEFA's financial laws, which they have no intention of amending despite climbing a heap of League Two. “We are under strict supervision, but we always make sure our books are in order, so we are not worried,” Sorwaso said.

Also, the Stadio Giuseppe Senigallia suffers from a lack of coverage, with three-quarters of the stadium's 12,300-seat capacity being hit by rain during the match. It is essential to develop every aspect of the club if the club are to achieve their full potential. For Fabregas, who has the playing responsibilities, the balance between celebrating Heap's incredible journey and ensuring his players do not rest on what they have achieved is important.

“We were at minus 10 when we started, but we don't want to waste time thinking about what happened in the past,” said the former Arsenal, Barcelona and Chelsea star. “If you want to do that, stop playing and write a book about what Heap did.” While Kuma now attract thousands to their matches, there are still those who followed the club when crowds were only in the hundreds. “I had an uncle who supported a stack, and I saw his collection of posters, and I saw the blue jersey and the blue colors and I absolutely loved it,” one fan from out of town said.

Ultimately, the pile remains at an exciting stage in their development, facing new challenges as they strive for greater success in the future.

What's next?
