Johannes Spurs, coach of the Southampton group, spoke about the difficulties he faced due to the “Spygate” spying scandal, which put him in a “difficult situation” last summer. In May, Southampton were expelled from the qualifiers and had four points deducted after admitting that they had spied on three clubs during the season. Subsequently, the future of coach Tunde Ekert was called into question amid an investigation by the Football Association, which could have resulted in him being suspended and banned from continuing his work.

At the start of the new season, the club and its fans had no idea whether Eckert would be punished for his role in the scandal. But at the beginning of October, those fears were allayed when the League announced that it would impose a £28,000 fine, and that the six-week ban would be suspended until the end of next season.

Southampton could have sacked Eckert after admitting his mistake in May, but the club decided to give him a new chance, with the club's owner, Dragan Solak, and the board supporting the decision. Speaking to BBC Radio Solent, Spurs said: "Of course, it put me in a difficult position. It was something not many sporting directors have experienced, planning a season and a squad with that level of uncertainty. I felt like we had one option, and I'm glad everyone around me, including Dragan Solak, agreed. We decided to take this route (backing Eckert) and bear all the consequences, and I'm glad we did."

Spurs was appointed as Southampton's manager in February 2025, and played a key role in Eckert's appointment. He previously held six sporting director positions at various clubs, including Belgium's Standard Liege and Italy's Genoa.

While the spying scandal was ongoing over the summer, Spurs revealed that he felt a personal obligation to support Eckert. He added: "This was something I focused on a lot over the summer, to support him as much as I could. We cannot forget that he is a young man who is going through a lot in his life, coming to a new country as an unknown face and achieving rapid fame. I just wanted to make sure that he was okay as a human being. I helped him with everything I could from my knowledge and experience, but also from my friendship. I made sure that there were more people around him who helped him, who had more experience in some matters than I did, and who specialized in the areas in which he needed help and support throughout the summer."
