Jordan James expresses his confidence in Wales' ability to face Portugal in the Nations League, despite the absence of key players.
Nations League: Wales won't fear star-studded Portugal - Jordan James - BBC Sport.

Jordan James, the Wales national team player, confirms that his team will not be afraid when they face “the best players in the world” in their Nations League opener against Portugal on Thursday. This comes at a time when Wales is suffering from the absence of a number of its prominent players, such as Joe Rodon and Dylan Lorlor, in addition to the withdrawal of Karl Darlow, Nathan Broadhead, and star Harry Wilson.

After returning to the top tier of the Nations League by winning Group B for 2024, Wales begins a difficult campaign as they meet a Portuguese team that includes a group of stars such as Ruben Diaz, Joao Cancelo, Nuno Mendes, Vitina, Joao Neves, in addition to 41-year-old Cristiano Ronaldo.

Wolves midfielder James says Wales will enter the match "fearless" as they seek their first victory since winning a World Cup qualifier against North Macedonia last November.

James said: "They are definitely the best players in the world, and you can't sugarcoat it. They have Champions League winners, that's stuff like that. I think we're always under pressure, we're used to that, so hopefully we can take advantage of that. You can't write us off. We have a good chance at the end, and we'll go out there and cause an upset."

James could potentially compete directly with a Portuguese midfield considered among the best in world football. In Portugal's last match, a 1-0 loss to Spain in the round of 16 of the World Cup last summer, Vitina and Neves were playing in midfield with Bruno Fernandes in front of them.

James has faced similar challenges in his young career, producing an impressive performance when Wales beat a Croatia midfield trio of Luka Modric, Marcelo Brozovic and Mateo Kovacic in October 2023.

James added: "I still have Kovacic's shirt from that match in my room."

This was a huge proud moment for me at a young age to be able to compete against the best. It was a real proud moment and I hope there will be many more like it.

James does not feel nervous when facing big names, although he felt “a kind of surprise” when he faced Lampard with Leicester City last season, as Lampard is his idol.

For James, who was born 11 months after Ronaldo first joined Manchester United in 2003, the chance to face the former Real Madrid star is "a little crazy".

James says Ronaldo's career, which so far includes 146 international goals over 23 years, reflects extraordinary qualities.

"We're all trying to achieve the same thing, which is to be the best player in the world," James said. "But you find those who don't seem human, like Messi, Neymar, Ronaldo - they have that extra quality that makes them come out in the big moments and perform again and again. I think that's the main thing. Their ability to keep doing that is unbelievable."
