Nigeria failed to qualify for the 2023 Women's World Cup after losing 2-1 to South Africa in the 2026 Women's Africa Cup of Nations (Wafcon) play-off match. Nigeria, considered one of the best teams on the continent, was favorite to retain the title, but was eliminated in the quarter-finals by Cameroon, after also losing to Malawi in the group stage.

With the four semi-finalists all guaranteed to qualify for the World Cup, there was one last chance for Justin Madugu's Nigeria stars to qualify for the global tournament. Nigeria met South Africa in a unique match in Casablanca, and the winner would have the opportunity to qualify for the World Cup qualifiers.

The second half of the match saw decisive goals from Thembi Kgatlana and Refilwe Gin, giving Banyana Banyana the win, despite some drama at the end of the match after Gin was sent off for receiving a second yellow card for handling the ball inside her own penalty area. However, Christie Ochebe was able to score a penalty kick in the 93rd minute, giving Nigeria hope in the final moments. But South African goalkeeper Cailin Swart showed her skills and saved Michelle Alozi's last-minute shot.

Nigeria finds itself outside the tournament for the first time since the Women's World Cup was launched in 1991 in China. This could cause major disappointment to football fans in Nigeria, who are accustomed to seeing their national team dominate the continent, with the Super Falcons having won the Wafcon title ten times.

Despite the difficulty of the match, there were many chances in the second half. Asisat Oswoola should have scored after getting past several challenges, but her shot wasn't powerful enough to be a threat. The first goal came in the 56th minute after a counter-attack, as Ronelle Donnelly played a wonderful pass from the middle of the field to Hilda Magaya, who sent a cross to Gatlana, who was able to shoot the ball into the net.

Ghana also qualified after coming from behind against Côte d'Ivoire to win 2-1. South Africa will now have to face Ghana in the World Cup qualifiers, with the teams competing in a six-team league in November and December, with opponents including Uzbekistan and Taiwan from Asia, Papua New Guinea from Oceania and Ecuador from South America. The top two teams from this tournament will advance to the final qualifiers in February, where three teams will have the chance to qualify for the World Cup.
