Rangers could revive their interest in this summer target

According toSports.

Rangers are preparing to reconsider signing Excelsior defender Kasper Weddle after the summer deal fell through.
Rangers Could Reignite Interest In This Summer Target: Why His Arrival Would Bolster Their Backline - Yahoo Sports.

If the latest transfer updates from journalist Pete O'Rourke are accurate, Rangers could revive their interest in Kasper Weddle, despite a potential summer deal being scrapped. John Soutar's failed move to AEK Athens has prevented them from seeking to sign the £2m defender from Excelsior, but they could return to trying to land him when the transfer window reopens in the winter.

Wedel is 23 years old and began his career in the academy of EK Wormo and Swedish club Helsingborg, where he joined the first team in 2020. Since then, he has made 61 appearances for the club in the top and second tiers, before moving to Excelsior in 2023 for €175,000. Although Weddell saw his team relegated to the Second Division in his first season, he led them back to the Premier League after being elected as team captain.

To date, Weddle has made 113 appearances in all competitions, showing his quality as a deep defenceman. However, his current contract expires next summer, suggesting interest from clubs such as Rangers who may try to land his services at a low price in January.

In the process of strengthening their defence, Rangers have signed Ben Godfrey and Olwethu Makhanya as part of a restructuring of the squad. Although Godfrey was the first choice in the squad, he lost his place to Makhanya, who took advantage of his chances after Godfrey was injured. However, it appears that Sautar is not in manager Derek McInnes' plans, as he has been frozen from the matchday squad, opening the way for Rangers to sign Weddle.

What Weddle can offer in Rangers' defense is his physical strength, which helps him dominate in the air, winning defensive headers and making attacking set pieces. His awareness in defence, precise tracking, well-timed blocks and interruptions make him a match for the ferocity and physicality of Scottish football. Although he faces some difficulties against quick transitions and one-on-ones on the floor, the Rangers value his high potential due to his well-rounded attributes.

The absence of European football could be a blessing in disguise for McInnes, who must now focus on domestic success after back-to-back wins against Celtic ahead of the international break. Rangers are just two points behind league leaders Celtic, as they recover from a disastrous start to the season, and Weddle's arrival is expected to bolster the defence, just as Kevin Kelce has done in attack amid long-term fitness issues for both Youssef Sheremeti and Lawrence Shankland.
