Young footballer Stephen Sessegnon has returned to his roots by joining AFC Wimbledon after a difficult spell with Wigan. Speaking to the media, Sessegnon shared details of his experience at Wigan and how it affected him, as well as how it feels to return to his south-west home in London.

The first meeting between Steven and his twin Ryan on the pitch was in a previous match, where they played together at Fulham's academy. But this time the meeting was different, as they met as rivals. Stephen points out that that moment was special for him, especially after spending three years in Manchester with Wigan.

“It was a great experience to be back here,” says Sessegnon, speaking from one of the team's training facilities in New Malden. "We're going back to where we started playing in the academy, and it's been nice to be close to my family again. I get to see my brothers, sisters and nephews, and I meet with Brian a few times a week. We discuss our lives as parents and leaders in our families."

Sessegnon's return to Wimbledon comes at a sensitive time in his career. In the 2023/24 season with Wigan, he played 29 matches, but suffered leg and knee injuries the following season, which saw him sidelined from the start of January 2025. At the start of the third season, he was placed on the transfer list by manager Gary Caldwell.

“Things change quickly in football,” Sessegnon adds. “When I was put on the transfer list, I was told that I would not play, and I did not go with the team on the pre-season trip. But in the end I started the first game of the season due to injuries, and I thought I did well.

“When I wasn't playing, I felt like I could contribute, but there was no confidence in me. But I learned a lot from that experience, especially about professionalism. Even when I was at my worst, I made sure to be the best person I could be.

Sessegnon moved to AFC Wimbledon on a two-year contract, with an option to extend it by 12 months. “When I got the call from Wimbledon, I was very excited,” he says. “There was nothing complicated, I knew I would be able to prove my abilities if I got the opportunity.”

His Wimbledon debut came on 8 August against Newport in the Carabao Cup, after a six-month absence from competitive action. Sessegnon says he feels confident now and is enjoying playing football again. The team has five clean sheets out of seven matches, which increases the confidence of the players.
