• Sullivan set to attend West Ham tie against advice.

West Ham United are preparing to welcome David Sullivan, the club's joint partner, to the Carabao Cup first round match against Portsmouth on Saturday, despite being advised not to attend due to fears of fan unrest.

Sullivan, 77, resigned as one of West Ham's co-chairmen last June after a joint investigation by the BBC and The Times revealed accusations by seven women of exploitative and inappropriate behavior towards them. Sullivan has strongly denied these accusations.

London Stadium management announced that they had recommended to West Ham that Sullivan should not attend matches due to concerns regarding fan safety. The stadium has requested advance notice of any planned visit by Sullivan, who retains a 38.8% stake in the club, to ensure additional security measures are in place.

This match against Portsmouth will be the club's first since the charges against Sullivan were announced. The investigation by both the BBC and The Times also found that Sullivan has been banned from contact with the club's women's and youth teams for three years due to safety concerns. The London Stadium management was unaware of these restrictions until the BBC report was published.

Sullivan has already come under a series of criticism from fans over his management of the club, which was relegated to the English Championship last season for the first time since 2011. Although West Ham have settled on the pitch, with a number of high-profile names such as manager Nuno Espirito Santo and captain Jarrod Bowen committing their futures to the club, the situation off the pitch remains murky.

The daughter of David Gould, Sullivan's late business partner, has pulled out of an agreement to sell part of her stake in the club to Czech businessman Daniel Kretinski, and instead reached an agreement with Amanda Staveley, the public face of the Saudi-backed takeover of Newcastle, to sell her 25.1% stake. However, Kretinsky sold a small portion of his stake as well, reducing his stake to less than 25%.

If Kretinsky buys Gold's shares, he will become West Ham's largest shareholder, without triggering any other clauses that would make him obliged to buy the rest of the club. Saturday's match against Portsmouth, which kicks off at 3pm London time, is expected to set a record attendance for an EFL Cup first round match, with the club selling 55,000 season tickets for the season.
