In VI Magazine's Time Machine section, we go back in time to tell stories about the past, republishing articles from our rich archive every weekend. This time, we go back ten years to when a standout talent emerged in Manchester. The talent was set to move quickly to the Dutch national team, with coach Danny Blind selecting him to represent his country before Ghana lured him. His name: Timothy Fosu-Mensah.

This is undoubtedly a huge contrast to 2026, when the player has almost been forgotten in world football. After nearly three and a half years without playing serious matches, Fosu-Mensah suffered a series of injuries that led to him losing his chance in the professional world, as he was left without a club in the spring of 2024. But instead of giving up, Fosu-Mensah is still fighting for his comeback.

Now, at the age of 28, he still dreams of returning to the spotlight. In May 2016, a few months before his debut for the Dutch national team, he stated in his first major interview with VI that he was "a man with a mission". The story begins with rousing lyrics by Martin Krabendam, who tells of Fosu-Mensah, who was not enjoying a holiday in Dubai or Ibiza, but rather sitting on the sofa in his apartment in Amsterdam, overlooking the Bijler district.

Despite the area's bad reputation, Bigler represents warmth and belonging to him. "I was born here and I feel like everyone else in the neighbourhood. My childhood friends are my friends now," says Fosu-Mensah. Although he currently resides with his father in Manchester, he always returns to Bigler to find comfort.

Fosu-Mensah spoke about the challenges he faces, noting that he receives great support from his friends and family. “We live a great life, but sometimes it's hard to reach my friends,” he says. "But now, I can have fun with my friends here. We go out and laugh, and get away from the stress of football."

The player talked about his rising stardom after his appearance with Manchester United, where he became the talk of everyone. “People talk about a fairy tale,” says Fosu-Mensah. "I'm happy with what I've achieved, but I'm not surprised. I set my goals a long time ago, and now things are moving quickly. I worked hard, and waited for the opportunity that Louis van Gaal gave me."

While he stresses the importance of hard work, Fosu-Mensah shares his feelings about the new coach, Jose Mourinho, who has shown interest in working with him. “I want to continue to develop under his leadership,” says Fosu-Mensah. “This is the next goal in my plan.”

What's next?

As Fosu-Mensah seeks a return to action, the question about his future in world football remains open. Will he be able to find a new club that will give him the opportunity to revive his career? Heading into 2026, it will be interesting to see if he can get back into the spotlight and compete at a high level again.
