Manchester City's deal to include young defender Herman Malonga from Paris Saint-Germain has declined, as the deal seemed to be in advanced stages before it suddenly collapsed. Malonga, 18, was expected to join City on a five-year contract, with reports showing he had made the decision to move to the English club after rejecting an offer to renew his contract with Paris Saint-Germain.

This news comes after reports indicated that Manchester City had spotted Malonga several times, and considered him a player with high potential, as the plan was to integrate him into the team first before considering loaning him to continue his development at the highest levels. However, the collapse of the deal presents coach Enzo Maresca with new challenges in re-evaluating his defensive options before the start of the competitive season.

The collapse of the deal comes after a period of great activity in the transfer market by City management, which last summer saw the signing of Elliot Anderson for £116m, making Malunga a long-term investment rather than an immediate solution in the defence. Although the deal was intended to enhance defensive depth, its collapse now represents an obstacle in planning and not a crisis for the team in the new season.

According to famous journalist Fabrizio Romano, the deal has already collapsed, leaving open questions about the reasons that led to this outcome. Stopping the deal at this stage is usually related to a change in the player’s preferences, a deterioration in relations between the clubs concerned, or the entry of a third party with a more attractive offer.

Malunga's decision to reject a renewal offer from Paris Saint-Germain in favor of Manchester City reflected a clear preference on the part of the player, making the sudden collapse of the agreement raising many questions about his immediate future.

This development puts renewed pressure on sporting director Hugo Viana to search for alternative options in the center of defence, as Josco Gvardiol's contract renewal provides a basis of stability in the defensive pyramid despite there being questions about the depth behind him. Although Manchester City had painted a clear picture of the Malonga deal as an investment in the club's academy, its collapse leaves a hole in the defensive recruitment plan that had been carefully crafted all summer.

The latest development is a reminder of the uncertainty that characterizes even the most advanced negotiations in the transfer market, with the collapse of Malonga's deal coming shortly after the club's chief executive, Ferran Soriano, intervened to rescue Anderson's deal at its critical moment.

The coming days will show whether Viana will move quickly to identify a replacement target with the same characteristics, or whether this summer's defense work will be considered complete without Malonga, as the transfer window draws to a close.

What's next?

Following the collapse of the deal, Manchester City are expected to look for alternatives to strengthen the defense line before the start of the season. All eyes may be on other players in the market, as the club seeks to secure strong defensive options that will ensure the team's stability in the upcoming competitions.
