English defender John Stones announced his move to Inter Milan, the Italian league champion, after leaving Manchester City this summer. An agreement has been reached that the contract will be valid until June 2028, with an annual salary of around 4 million euros.

Stones left the Etihad Stadium after a decade of service, during which he achieved every major trophy possible. The player joined Manchester City from Everton in August 2016, for a fee of £47.5 million, spending ten years at the club and winning six Premier League titles, one Champions League, three FA Cups and three League Cups.

In his final season with Manchester City, he added to his collection of an FA Cup medal before departing as a free agent on July 1, 2026. With his departure, Stones was succeeded by a group of new players under coach Enzo Marishca and director of football Hugo Viana.

His move to Inter represents a huge opportunity for Stones to continue his career at the highest levels of European football, with the Italian champions identifying the Englishman as an experienced and technically proficient option capable of competing in domestic competitions and the Champions League in the coming years.

As Fabrizio Romano reports, all contractual terms have been agreed, making this his first move outside of English football, where he has made over 300 appearances for Barnsley, Everton and Manchester City.

The contract, which runs for two years with no option to extend, reflects the current stage of Stones' career and Inter's preference for a structured, specific commitment rather than an open-ended agreement. Stones is considered an immediate option in the starting lineup rather than a long-term investment.

A salary of around €4 million per season is a significant drop compared to what Stones could have earned at the peak of his career, demonstrating the pragmatic approach he has taken in securing the right environment for himself rather than searching for the most lucrative offer.

Newcastle United, Aston Villa and Atletico Madrid were linked with interest in Stones at various stages of the summer, but Inter Milan secured his signature, with joining one of Europe's most prestigious clubs in a new country in the final phase of his career the deciding factor.

Stones' transfer concludes a chapter in one of the most important defensive partnerships in Manchester City's recent history, with the Barnsley-born defender having been a central figure in the team throughout Pep Guardiola's tenure. Viana and Marishka have already begun to address the gap left by his departure, with Marc Guehi joining the club earlier in 2026 and Vitor Reis returning from his loan at Girona to push for a role in the coach's new plans.

Stones brings a wealth of experience, not only in terms of trophies but also in terms of the ability to manage big matches and decisive moments, which the younger players will not be able to imitate immediately. Marishka will be keenly aware of this deficiency as he shapes his defensive options for next season.

Whether Stones' nine-year relationship with the Etihad Stadium will ever produce a legendary comeback, or whether that phase will close permanently with his move to Milan, his contribution over a decade of extraordinary success at Manchester City will ensure his name lives on long after the contracts have expired.

What's next?
