Background

Lukas Bergvall, a young midfielder, is considered a valuable addition to any team in the English Premier League, especially with his high technical skills and potential to develop his level. With interest from several clubs, there could be a struggle to sign him in the market, further complicating negotiations.

Newcastle United tried to acquire the services of Lukas Bergvall from Tottenham, but the London club rejected the offer amounting to 46 million pounds, which indicates the seriousness of Newcastle's interest in the player.
David Ornstein: Newcastle United have £46m bid rejected for top transfer target.

Newcastle United have expressed their seriousness in signing young player Lukas Bergvall, submitting an offer worth 46 million pounds, but Tottenham Hotspur has closed the door on this deal for the time being. According to a report by The Athletic's David Ornstein, Tottenham have rejected the offer, stating that the amount offered "exceeds the offers made by Nottingham Forest to date."

This rejection reflects many things; Firstly, it shows that Newcastle United are serious in their pursuit of the player's services. Secondly, it shows that Tottenham still believe there is more value in the player, whether by keeping him or receiving a larger sum when selling him.

The report states that "all attempts to sign the young player, including the highest offers, have been rejected by Tottenham", with the possibility of a sale being considered if numbers reach a level deemed appropriate by them. This is not a definite "no", but rather an attempt to set a price.

For his part, Bergvall expressed his desire to look for a new opportunity outside Tottenham this summer, even though his contract runs until June 2031. The player’s position complicates matters, as the selling club can impose its conditions, especially when there is more than one person interested in the player.

Newcastle needs to strengthen its ranks, after they sold midfielder Sandro Tonali to Tottenham, and they also lost the opportunity to sign Swiss international Johan Manzambi, who moved to Aston Villa. Bergvall fits the desired player profile; He is young, has technical skills, and reflects an upward curve, which makes him valuable for the future.

Bergvall has made 78 appearances for Tottenham since his £8.5m move from the Jorgarden club in 2024. Last season he played 33 games, scoring one goal and making five assists. On the other hand, Tottenham strengthened its midfield by signing Matheus Fernandes and Tonali, which could open the way for new moves, but only at the price set by the selling club, not the price requested by the buyer.

Newcastle United appear to be trying to be aggressive without being reckless in the transfer market, and Bergvall has great potential, but if Spurs are asking for high sums, Newcastle should consider other options. Bergvall may be an interesting talent, but there are many good midfielders in Europe. If the fee rises significantly above £46m, the wise decision would be to test Spurs again, then quickly move on to other options.

What's next?

Newcastle is expected to continue its attempts to strengthen its ranks by signing Bergvall, especially after the departure of Sandro Tonali. At the same time, Tottenham may have to re-evaluate their position if offers increase or if the player shows a strong desire to move during the summer transfer window.
