Manchester City announced the signing of Philly Foden to a new long-term contract, extending his stay at the Etihad Stadium until 2030, with the possibility of adding another 12 months. This step comes within the framework of the club's belief in the abilities of the English international player, although the past two seasons have witnessed some challenges due to injuries and inconsistency in performance.

Foden's previous contract was due to expire next summer, sparking numerous speculation about his future. However, the club decided to secure one of its most prominent academy graduates to be a key part of coach Enzo Maresca's plans in the coming years. Negotiations over the new contract continued for several months before a final agreement was reached.

After signing the contract, Foden expressed his happiness at extending his stay at the club where he grew up, describing the moment as very special. He said: "Extending my future with Manchester City means the world to me. Playing for this club is everything I've always wanted, and it's a pleasure to wear this shirt."

He also added: “It is no secret that I was lucky enough to be part of a historical period that witnessed the achievement of many titles, but we always look to the future and strive to win more.”

Foden is 26 years old and has spent his entire career with Manchester City after joining the club's academy as a child. He progressed through the youth ranks before making his debut with the first team under coach Pep Guardiola, and became one of the most decorated academy graduates in the club’s history.

Although he could not repeat the outstanding performances that earned him individual accolades during the 2023-24 season, Manchester City remain supportive of the player's long-term importance. Foden made 50 appearances in all competitions last season, but found himself shuffled through the starting line-up as the squad reshaped under Maresca.

Foden also suffered disappointment at international level after he did not join the England squad for the World Cup last summer. The player previously admitted that the mental and physical challenges he faced in the past two years affected his performance.

However, Manchester City remain confident that Foden can return to his best form. The new contract reflects the club's confidence that Foden will return to being one of the Premier League's most prominent creative players, as he enters what is set to be the peak of his career.

With Manchester City preparing for another difficult season in England and Europe, securing Foden's future is an important part of the long-term planning. After more than two decades with the club, the England international now has the opportunity to add more silverware to his impressive career in the blue sky.
