It all started with a newspaper report about the tense relationship between Sam Hamam, chairman of Wimbledon, and Morton Town Council, and the continuing difficulties in reaching agreement on a permanent home for the club. Bath had bought the club in 1981, but with plans to build a permanent stadium at Morton never materialised, the club had been sharing the stadium with Crystal Palace since 1991, a situation that was uncomfortable for both parties. “We were always getting insulted by the Palace fans who called us occupiers,” recalls Kenny Cunningham, the Dublin-born left-back.
Over time, there has been constant talk about the club's future, whether it be returning to Blog Lane or continuing to share the stadium. After reading Bath's report, Tommy Higgins, through his work at Ticketmaster Ireland, realized that a property developer called Owen O'Callaghan had permission to build a 40,000-seater stadium on the outskirts of Dublin. The idea only required having a team as one of the tenants.
Negotiations began with Hamam, but the first meeting did not result in any progress. But a chance encounter on the streets of Dublin brought Higgins together with a group of prominent businessmen, and it was decided to revive the plan.

In the mid-1990s, English football was going through a period of transition. As the league approached a new phase with the introduction of foreign players such as Jurgen Klinsmann and Dennis Bergkamp, interest began to grow. By 17 August 1996, David Beckham had scored a stunning goal from midfield against Wimbledon, becoming one of the most frequently scored goals in league history.
There was huge interest from the Irish group who were preparing to make a £6m bid to buy 74% of the club. As word began to spread, the reaction from fans was mixed.
“Although the idea made commercial sense, I thought it was ridiculous,” said Ivor Hiller, a Wimbledon fan from his amateur league days. “If we moved to Dublin, it would have meant the end of the club.”
Ultimately, after 18 months of talks, communications with Hamam broke off. In 2004, the club was transferred to Milton Keynes, while AFC Wimbledon was reborn in the same year. Thirty years after that attempt to move the club, AFC Wimbledon were able to return to Plough Lane, marking the greatest achievement in the club's history.
“Despite the sadness surrounding the thought of moving to Dublin, it is a great achievement that they have made it back,” Cunningham said.
What's next?
With interest in the English Premier League growing, discussions may continue about the possibility of moving clubs to new locations. If this proposal comes true, it could radically change how fans interact with their teams. It could also open the way for other clubs to consider similar options, which could impact the future of football in the English Premier League.
