Wolves coach: Mika Nouri's chance with the Blazers was "overtaken" by his unconventional contract

PORTLAND, Ore. — On the biggest day of Mika Nouri's career, the focus was not on his biggest opportunity — being named head coach of the Portland Blazers — but on the terms under which he agreed to take the job. Nouri committed on Tuesday to sign a one-year contract with Portland, with team options in each of the next two seasons, according to sources within the league.
In a league that values safety and time to build sustainable success, this was a highly unorthodox move — whether by new Blazers owner Tom Dundon or by the 52-year-old Nouri.
His former coach, Minnesota Timberwolves coach Chris Finch, said on Tuesday that he wished Nouri's achievement had received more attention instead of focusing on the terms of his contract. “I think it's unfortunate that a big part of the story of Mika's great opportunity has been overshadowed by the nature of the deal he signed,” Finch added to reporters ahead of the league draft.
Finch and Nouri first worked together in 2015 with the Denver Nuggets, where they served as assistant coaches for three years under head coach Michael Malone. When Finch became head coach at Minnesota in 2021, he recruited Norrie from Detroit, where he was offensive coordinator under coach Dwane Casey.
Nouri has interviewed for seven head coaching positions over the years, and was among the finalists for jobs in Cleveland, New York and Chicago in recent recruiting cycles.
Finch said he didn't have the "courage" to ask Nouri about the terms of his contract with Portland, because he knows how rare major league coaching opportunities are.
“I know there are 30 of these jobs,” Finch said, “and they're hard to come by. They're incredibly rewarding in different ways. I know he wasn't focused on the money for sure, but he was focused first on the opportunity. That's what we call all our players here to do. You've got to go after the opportunity, not the money.”
“Then, I also know that you have to bet on yourself in this world,” Finch continued. “Especially when you're an outsider. ...We consider ourselves a bit of outsiders. We didn't grow up in the game, we didn't play at Carolina or Duke, so sometimes your path is different and you have to take chances along the way. "I'm very excited for him."
Finch said he made Nouri his main assistant in Minnesota because he could see a similarity in their approach to the game when they were in Denver.
Finch said Nouri's strengths would be his creativity in attack and his understanding of how to win games through detail management.
“I think the two biggest changes (between assistant and head coach) are that it becomes less about basketball and more about leadership,” he added. “I think he has natural leadership abilities. I think something that has influenced Nouri throughout his career is that he never pursued opportunities, but that doesn't mean he's not qualified for them.
"And I think he naturally trusts those around him, so I think he'll be good at delegating," Finch continued. "He's not a microcoach. He's someone who will empower others around him."

What's next?
